Why is it so hard for some of us to live, with an attitude of praise and thanksgiving, toward God?  As Christians, we of all people should live, each day on our knees, honoring God for His benefits.  If you are having trouble giving thanks for each day, let me give you a

RECIPE FOR THANKSGIVING.

One Cup of Contentment:  Phil. 4:11-12 I have learned to be content in whatever circumstance....

Contentment is very rare.  Neither the rich nor the poor are content, and so thanksgiving is rare as well. A contented person recognizes that God knows best.  Whether God has chosen to give him much or little, it is the right amount from a wise and loving Father.  Contentment must be learned.

Ten Tablespoons of Thoughtfulness:  Psalms 103:2  Bless the Lord O my soul and forget not His benefits.

Thinking of God’s many blessing will lead to thanksgiving.  Times of meditation are needed, every day and every hour of life.  “If you think your will thank.”

Six Teaspoons of Self-Knowledge: 1 Cor. 4:7  Who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive….. Only when we recognize that we have no claim to anything at all, will we be grateful, for whatever God gives us.  Those who presume they deserve much, do not give thanks, but turn to bitterness, envy, jealousy, and greed.  These consume and destroy, but thanksgiving brings joy and enrichment of character and courage for the days ahead.

Combine all ingredients in a New Heart: Col. 3:15 Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, since as members of one body, you were called to peace. And be thankful!

All the ingredients are related.  A thoughtful person will be contented; a contented person has faith in God’s wisdom; a wise man knows both how small and how great he is.  And these graces will be developed best when Jesus rules the heart, turning it from greed and envy to service and thanksgiving.

WOMEN’S Ministry Corner

Jesse Tree Advent Project

The Christmas season is fast approaching; the Women’s Ministry will celebrate the season of Advent and the coming of Jesus at Christmas with a Jesse Tree.

The Jesse Tree project takes place December 1 through 25. It’s similar to an advent calendar, but it’s more about tracing the history of the coming of Jesus.

The tree gets its name from Jesse, the father of David. The first day’s scripture is Isaiah 11:1-2 – “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord.” This branch came in the form of a babe, and through the scriptures for each ornament, you can see God weaving the stories into place to ready the world for the coming Messiah.

To prepare for this project we will need an assortment of 25 ornaments to represent the history of the coming of Jesus. These ornaments maybe homemade or bought. We would like for all church members to have a part in this project. On Tuesday, October 16 at 6:00 pm there will be a planning meeting and for everyone to select their ornaments and to receive more information about the project.

Please contact Cathy Farquhar for more information.
