Have you ever been a position, where someone asks you for a reference to get a job, and you find yourself in an awkward place?  You don’t want to lie, but you really can’t tell the truth because it will hurt.  Robert Thornton, professor of economics at Lehigh University, once composed the ideal letter to fit the situation.

I am pleased to say that this candidate is a former colleague of mine.  In my opinion, you will be fortunate to get this person to work for you. I recommend him with no qualifications whatsoever.  No person would be better for the job.  I urge you to waste no time in making this candidate an offer of employment.  All in all, and without reservation, I cannot say enough good things about him, nor can I recommend him too highly.

Well, you can see that there is a great deal of ambiguity in this recommendation.  I am particularly fond of the statement, “No person would be better for the job.” This is what I personally call, talking around the issue.

We might get by with talking around the issue when it comes to giving a job recommendation, but there should never be anything but straight talk, when it comes to telling people about Jesus.  We must clearly express the truth of the gospel, without being ambiguous; because the person’s eternal life depends upon it.

I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God, to salvation, for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

(Romans 1:16)

 Special Thank you………

Dear Church Family,

I am so thankful and grateful for the many prayers you lifted up for me before and after my surgery. The surgery and recovery went well and all seems to be back to normal. I know God is the Great healer and He will continue to help me towards a full recovery.

Pam Byrom

Dear Church family,

I want to thank all of you for all the prayers and cards during Ronda’s illness and passing. God bless all of you; you are a great family to have.

Judy Varley

I want to thank you for all that you did this summer to support CURE with your VBS program at First Baptist Church of Collinsville. We know it takes many hours of planning and sacrifice to put together a quality program. Thank you for serving your community and thank you for being a voice for these precious patients who are so often overlooked.  This summer, VBS programs across the nation banded together to complete the cost of 70 surgeries! Join us in celebrating all these children who will receive surgery and hear about the hope of Jesus because of the generosity of your children. Your gift of $700.73 has made this work possible.

With gratitude,

Lee Cooper – Stewardship Advisor of CURE International

Dear Friends,

We were very new members of First Baptist Church, Collinsville in May when I discovered I had stage 4 cancer. Bud and I have seen such an outpouring of love, support, prayers and concern from members and we are truly amazed and appreciative the way this church, our church, has embraced us.  We have just recently had very good news from my doctor as it appears my latest Pet Scan showed no signs of cancer. My treatment will continue for quite a while and I ask for your continue prayers. We are so grateful we found First Baptist Church of Collinsville, God is God.

Joann Smith
