A mother tells the story of a Christmas program at a school, where her young son Nicholas attended. During the program his class stood to sing the song, “Christmas Love”. All the students were adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters, and bright snowcaps upon their heads.

Those in the front row, held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the song. As the class would sing “C” is for Christmas, and child would hold up the letter C. Then “H” is for Happy and on and on, until each child holding up his portion, presented the complete message, “CHRISTMAS LOVE”.

The performance went smoothly until suddenly, a small girl on the front row, held up the letter “M”, but was totally unaware that she had turned it upside down. The letter appeared as a “W”, instead of the letter M. She had no idea, why everyone was laughing, as she stood tall, proudly holding her letter “W”.

Many tried to shush the children, but the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, then we saw it all together. A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday, in the first place, and why even in the chaos, there was purpose in what we were doing.

When the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:

“CHRISTWAS LOVE”. And I believe He still is! Christmas is truly about the love of Christ, for a lost world and not the many other things, we sometimes make it to be.

Millions of shoeboxes are collected during National Collection Week, the third week in November every year. Before these special gifts can bring hope and joy to children around the world, each one has to be carefully inspected and made ready for overseas shipment by volunteers like you. You can help prepare shoeboxes for delivery by volunteering at one of our eight processing centers across the United States. About 80,000 volunteers serve annually at our processing centers.
